Alghanim family

The Alghanim family is one of Kuwait's founding merchant families. The modern company dates to 1932, when Yusuf Ahmed Alghanim returned to Kuwait from studies abroad and took over his father's trading business, building it within less than a decade into a major regional operation employing more than 4,000 people.

How the fortune was built

A defining move came in 1945, when Yusuf Alghanim partnered with General Motors to bring American-made cars to Kuwait — a relationship that grew into one of the largest GM dealerships in the world and remains a core business today. From the early 1970s, his sons Kutayba and Bassam diversified the business into electronics retail, owned appliance brands, real estate, and industrial services.

Where the family invests today

Alghanim Industries now operates more than 30 businesses in over 40 countries. Day-to-day leadership passed from longtime family CEO Omar Alghanim to a professional non-family CEO in January 2024, though the family retains ownership control. Recent expansion includes a new EV-charging infrastructure venture announced in late 2025, continuing the group's push into mobility alongside its legacy GM automotive distribution and Xcite electronics retail chain.
